Magnum's 2013 Environmental Savings

In 2013 Magnum Customers Saved a Cumulative 347,544 Pounds of Raw Materials

Seattle, WA March 31, 2014 – In 2013 Magnum brand toner users and participants of Magnum’s Recycling Program made significant progress in environmental savings and reducing landfill waste. Magnum Print Solutions, the largest toner remanufacturer in the Northwest, has redesigned the toner cartridge manufacturing process, optimizing packaging design and recycling efforts to minimize waste and maximize component reuse.

With over 350 million toner cartridges discarded in landfills every year, Magnum’s process of reuse is significant. “The Magnum toner cartridge can be reused up to 12 times,” according to Steve Seavecki, Owner and President of Magnum. “By choosing a locally remanufactured cartridge that stays in the US, companies can make a real impact.” To track the impact, Magnum created an online application - ‘Carbon Calculator’ which lists the environmental savings of each element of a toner cartridge including metal, oil, trees, water and greenhouse gases.

In 2013 Magnum calculated Magnum users’ total environmental savings to be:

  • Recycled over 22,750 pounds of metal from toner cartridges
  • Conserved 115,848 quarts of oil
  • Conserved 347,544 pounds of raw materials.
  • Prevented 154,464 pounds of recyclable materials from being sent to landfills
  • Saved 386 trees
  • Saved 274,174 gallons of water
  • Prevented 46,339 pounds of greenhouse gas from being emitted

The Magnum Recycling Program recycles used toner cartridges from businesses throughout the Puget Sound. Magnum provides containers for used cartridges and works with the business to arrange pickup. Participating businesses educate their employees about the impact, and designate areas for the cartridge containers. Companies enrolled in this program include the Fred Hutchinson Research Center, Seattle Cancer Care Alliance as well as locally owned office supply distributors Keeney’s and Chuckals.

Magnum Print Solutions named finalist for Small Business of the Year Award

Third annual King County Executive’s Small Business Awards recognizes local manufacturer in Small Business of the Year category

Seattle, WA September 6, 2013 – Magnum Print Solutions, the Seattle based business and largest toner manufacturer in the Northwest, has been named as one of three finalists for the Small Business of the Year Award by King County Executive, Dow Constantine. The Small Business Awards recognize the achievements and accomplishments of small businesses throughout King County which are vital to the economy and job creation in the region; over 95% of the businesses in King County have 50 or fewer employees.

Nominees for the Small Business of the Year award were selected based on their application responses. The application weighted statements made by the nominees in several categories. How the nominated business has impacted employment, including employee related issues such as training programs offered, benefits provided and employee turnover rates. Unique approaches used in providing products and services; whether the nominee uses green vendors, offers specialty items and how the nominee differentiates itself from competitors. What the nominees approach is to customer service - how the business retains and recruits customers.

In the selection process all of the applicants’ responses were reviewed and tallied and the three finalists determined. The Small Business of the Year Award is given to the small business that best exemplifies the tenacity, perspicacity, and audacity it takes to successfully operate a small business.

The two other finalists for the Small Business of the Year category include Keeney’s Office Supply (Redmond) and POP! Gourmet Popcorn Company (Kent.) The Awards ceremony honoring all 21 finalists in 7 categories will be held at the Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue on Wednesday September 25, at 7:15 a.m.
